The 8 a.m. creativity test

Last week for CreComm ad class, we were tasked with persuading people to enjoy something they already own by making a video on Vine or Instagram.

There was some discussion today in the CreComm newsroom over the videos. Some of my peers wondered if it was OK to post our videos on our blogs given most have a theme (this one is human rights).

Maintaining a professional presence online is important for everyone, but the answer was yes. We’re students and it was a class assignment.

And after all, this is the assignment a large Chicago PR firm agency uses to test potential interns.

Feeling the rush

Ask any CreComm what they think about the Creative Communications program and they’ll be quick to tell you how busy it is.

It’s no secret there’s no smooth sailing in the program, but student complaints about school being “busy” are nothing new.

Ask a full-time university student how they’re juggling their workload, and they’d be quick to complain about how swamped they are.

Between a million hours of assigned readings, midterms, and essays, life can seem stressful.

But try coming to CreComm, a program unlike any other offered in this province, and a million times harder than any university.

Some simplify it as a Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. kind of deal, but really there’s so much more to it, and that’s what hit me this week.

It’s not the being early for your 8 a.m. class, last-minute deadlines, piles of homework, or fierce marking that’s the hard part.

It’s the strive for perfection everyone in this program is (or should) be trying to meet while their minds are stretched to the max.

That’s the real challenge.

But why complain when overcoming it is what you signed up for?

CreComm at last

Last week marked the start of the journey I’ve been talking about for years. It’s this thing called CreComm, and it’s hard to believe it’s finally here. For those of you not familiar with the term, it’s the nickname for the Creative Communications program at Red River College in Winnipeg. It’s the second part of a four-year joint degree program with the University of Winnipeg, and what I’ve been waiting years for.

CreComm is a rigorous and highly regarded program that prepares students for careers in journalism, public relations, broadcasting, and advertising.

I’ve had my heart set on a journalism major since Day 1, but am excited for all aspects of the program.

I’ll be updating this blog regularly about my CreComm journey, and plan on writing about human rights in Winnipeg to fit in with a rights theme I want this blog to have.
